More DescriptionMany things happen to kids, or in the presence of kids, that will encroach upon and remain etched in their psyche, virtually, forever. Whether the significant effects of certain of these circumstances are positive or negative can and will influence future beliefs and behaviors, well into adulthood. Most people, as they continue to mature, will probably overcome adverse experiences to move on to more "normal" development as defined by the society. But there will be some who cannot--who may view the world as being against them at every turn, especially if they see themselves as deprived in education, employment, housing, relationships---the customary things our society has to offer . . . The Great American Dream. These kinds of struggles seem to be most prevalent in the black community. Why some would give up on "the system" and want to retaliate can be rationalized. In fact, I'm convinced a desire to retaliate for perceived injustice is inherent in everyone, irrespective of race. Fortunately, though, the world gives us some who will turn negatives into challenges, and challenges into successes, despite the difficulties or dangers in doing so. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one great example of that.I am black; I am Native American; I am white. I am every man.
