But who were the first women to enter German institutes of higher education and how did they carve out their own niche in academia? The answer to these central questions is provided in this book on the basis of historical sources, more recent statistical analysis, and biographical evidence. The studies in this book offer, for the first time, a summary view over the development of women's education in the German Empire with a comparative view to the present. The studies present their results and their statistical base-data, not only for their own arguments, but also to serve as a basis for further studies. The results of the work are of particular importance for the modern understanding of equality and the still important issue of equality of opportunities for women and men. German description: Uber Jahrhunderte hinweg waren die Universitaten fur die Ausbildung der mannlichen Jugend verantwortlich, ein unbestrittener "Hort der Mannlichkeit". Aber wer waren die ersten Frauen an den deutschen Hochschulen und wie erkampften sie sich ihren Platz in der Wissenschaft? Der Beantwortung dieser zentralen Frage wird anhand historischer Quellen, neuester statistischer Auswertungen und biografischer Zeugnisse nachgegangen.Die Studie bietet erstmals eine Gesamtschau uber die Entwicklung des Frauenstudiums im Deutschen Kaiserreich mit einem vergleichenden Ausblick bis in die Gegenwart.
