More Description Discovering Pentecost is based on actual events--about a Lutheran pastor who was baptized in the Holy Spirit at his confirmation when he was a fourteen-year-old farm boy. That afternoon, he received words in another language while sitting behind the barn. He wondered whether he was going crazy and never told anyone about his strange affliction.
As a mature pastor, he led a Bible study on First Corinthians. A class member troubled him by insisting that the gifts of the Holy Spirit should be available to us now. At Seminary, he had been taught that the Lord ceased performing miracles, including gifts of the Spirit, when the Bible was codified. The pastor believed in this doctrine of cessation.
However, he also wondered about miracles and Holy Spirit gifts. He heard about a shoemaker in a nearby village with a healing ministry, so the pastor and the congregational president made an appointment with him.
As they walked up the sidewalk to the man's house, the shoemaker received gifts of knowledge and wisdom.
The Holy Spirit instructed him not to tell the pastor that he had been filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit at his confirmation. Rather, the shoemaker was directed to use Scripture to convince the two visitors that Jesus performs miracles today, just as he did in New Testament times. Further, the shoemaker should encourage the pastor to ask for the baptism in the Holy Spirit as a matter of faith.
The pastor does so and is shocked to discover that the strange sounds in his head for decades are his gift of tongues.
Further, he realizes that he was baptized in the Holy Spirit at his confirmation.
The play is unique in several ways--including footnotes and a PowerPoint projection of Scripture passages on the wall behind the actors throughout the play.
