It's early fall, and a series of double homicides have the Madison Police Department, and the FBI baffled. Frustrated with their lack of progress, a former state senator, whose son and daughter-in-law are among the victims, reaches out to private investigator Samantha Summers - ex-cop, disbarred lawyer, and currently a P.I. - to take a look at the case from a different perspective. Sam is eager to help. One of the victims is Sam's mentor from law school. As Sam and her best friend and housemate, professional gambler Chancy Evans begin their investigation, FBI Special Assistant Director Jamison tells Sam to back-off, that they have everything under control. A few nights later, Detective Joseph Righetti, Sam's disgruntled ex-partner from the Madison PD, and the person responsible for outing her, delivers a similar message. Soon an arrest is made. Sam is certain they have the wrong person and, when the former senator fires her, she goes to work for the Public Defender's office to clear the suspect. As Sam and Chancy continue to make substantial headway and gather information that brings them closer to learning who's truly behind the murders, an attempt is made on their lives, bringing urgency to solving the mystery before they are the next murdered couple.
