More DescriptionGenealogy of the author's family can be traced back to the 10th century A.D. His earliest known ancestor, Purushottama Dutta, was the leader of one of the five Kayastha clans that migrated with five Brahmin clans from Kannauj in present-day Uttar Pradesh, to Bengal at the invitation of King Adisura. These families came to settle down and assist the king in strengthening his administration & re-establishing the Vedic religion in Bengal. Purushottama's descendants later settled down at Bally in South-West Bengal. In the 14th century, Tekari Dutta the 12th in line from Purushottama, moved from Bally to Muzaffarpur Pargana which was the contemporary name for the Andul-Mohiary area of present-day Howrah district. He purchased a considerable amount of real estate to become the first zamindar of the region. The Sultan of Bengal awarded him the hereditary title of "Chowdhury". The illustrious Kolkata-based "Dutta Family of Hatkhola" was the first major offshoot of the family around 1705 AD. Other offshoots, including the author's own family, have also moved to Kolkata, elsewhere in India, and abroad. This book supersedes the author's initially published work based on data from older books written by the family's ancestors, supported by information from other referenced documents, and includes family tree charts covering about 27 generations.
