More DescriptionSolomon is the Sherlock Holmes of his day. The wise preacher watches every act and words of man and concludes that all events are vanity. The book of Ecclesiastes is a commentary on 1 John 2:15-17. There is no lasting profit in attaining riches, good looks, or fame while among the living. Solomon, the preacher, discovers by observation the same thing that Jacob of old did. The old patriarch was asked by Pharaoh how old he was. Jacob replied, "9 The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years: few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage" (Genesis 47:9). Those that see their life as simply a time of passing through, rather than a permanent residence, are on their way to a heavenly home (see Hebrews 11:14-16). The conclusion to a life of observation and experience is that it is better to fear God and keep his commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
