Andrew Johnston was born in 1963 in New Zealand. He is a poet and journalist who is associated with the "Wellington school" of poets. He earned a bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of Otago and a master's degree in English Literature from the University of Auckland. In 1995 he represented New Zealand at the University of Iowa's International Writing Program.

Johnston started working as an editor in 1998 at the international Herald Tribune in Paris. In 2004 Johnston founded "The Page", a Web site that features poems and essays from elsewhere on the Internet. In 2007 he was the J.D. Stout Fellow at Victoria University. In 2010 he left the International Herald Tribune to edit the annual Education for All Global Monitoring Report, the United Nations' major global survey of education, published by UNESCO. He also edits the annual Africa Progress Report for the Africa Progress Panel.
