More DescriptionHalf a century after Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower’s US presidency (1953 1961), nuclear wreckage of the world is again a genuine possibility due to the proliferation of nuclear arms in the Middle and Far East. In addition, the garrison state in which every citizen is monitored appears to be a near-fact of modern life. President Eisenhower effectively rebuffed both these developments with shrewd but peaceful psychological warfare during his presidency, using his formidable experience gained while winning World War II; and after his presidency when he advised John F. Kennedy how to manage the Cuba crisis. In particular, Eisenhower developed the Anglo-American special relationship with former wartime allies and Prime Ministers Winston Churchill (who worried in private that Eisenhower would make war much more probable’) and Harold Macmillan, who was horrified when he heard that it would take only eight nuclear bombs to destroy Britain. For the first time, Evan Thomas recreates in full the person who made decisions in secret that influence us to this day.
