In the year 117 the Ninth Hispanic Legion, stationed at Hadrian’s Wall, went into the mists of Caledonia and acquired legendary status when 4,000 men disappeared in the Scottish highlands without a trace. Twenty years later, Marcus Flavius Aquila, son of one of the cursed legion’s centurions, arrives in Britain in command of a Gallic auxiliary cohort to be stationed in Isca Dumnoniorum. Everything goes smoothly until a druid arrives in the region and provokes an uprising among the Britons. Marcus’s expertise saves his men and their outpost, but he is severely wounded and must retire from service. Retired and depressed, he is presented with the opportunity for the greatest adventure of his life, for north of Hadrian’s Wall there is a rumor that a powerful war amulet has reappeared: the Eagle of a Roman legion. It can be none other than the Eagle of the Ninth, and Marcus is willing to risk his life in order to restore honor to his father’s legion, take the trophy from the barbarians, and solve the mystery of the legion’s disappearance.
