Book Description:

This book describes an overlooked solution to a long-standing problem in health care. The problem is an informational supply chain that is unnecessarily dependent on the minds of doctors for assembling patient data and medical knowledge in clinical decision making. That supply chain function is more than the human mind can deliver. Yet, dependence on the mind is built into the traditional role of doctors, who are educated and licensed to rely heavily on personal knowledge and judgment....

Author Biography
Weed, Lawrence L. (Author)
Lawrence Leonard Weed was born in Troy, New York on December 26, 1923. He received a chemistry degree from Hamilton College in 1945 and a medical degree from Columbia University in 1947. In the 1950s, he created the problem-oriented medical record, or POMR, which is a way of recording and monitoring patient information. He presented his new method in a two-part article in The New England Journal of Medicine entitled Medical Records That Guide and Teach, which was published in 1968. He later developed a computerized version of POMR that came to be known as Promis - the Problem-Oriented Medical Information System.

In the 1980s, he developed knowledge coupling software linked to a database of medical knowledge derived from thousands of journal articles. Doctors could input the information gathered in the POMR process and then receive a list of possible diagnoses and treatment options, with arguments for and against each option.

He also wrote several books including Medical Records, Medical Education, and Patient Care: The Problem-Oriented Record as a Basic Tool; Your Health Care and How to Manage It: Your Health, Your Problems, Your Plans, Your Progress; Knowledge Coupling: New Premises and New Tools for Medical Care and Education; Managing Medicine; and Medicine in Denial written with his son Lincoln. He died on June 3, 2017 at the age of 93.
