Milton Ralph Moskowitz was born in Yonkers, New York on September 1, 1927. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago. After college, he worked as a copy boy at The Chicago Sun before becoming a reporter at the International News Service. He later worked for Reuters, Advertising Age, and the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson. In 1968, he began writing a biweekly newsletter entitled Business and Society, which focused on corporate social responsibility. He spent 15 years writing a business column entitled The Money Tree for The San Francisco Chronicle.
He wrote seven books during his lifetime including The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America written with Robert Levering. They compiled best companies lists annually for Fortune magazine beginning in 1998. Moskowitz compile his final list for Fortune in 2015. He died on March 5, 2019 at the age of 91.
