The thesis contributes to performance data and getting a better mechanistic understanding about the factors influencing the performance of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland treating real domestic wastewater under tropical conditions. Two days hydraulic retention time was found optimum for organic matter removal. Macrophyte enhance the ability of the wetland to withstand higher organic and suspended solids loading. Plant roots enhances microbial populations related to the transformation and degradation of pollutants in constructed wetlands. Sorption processes were found important in simulating COD and ammonia removal. The rates of oxygen transfer by physical re-aeration and root oxygen transfer were found insufficient.
