He dismisses his childhood friend, Padraig's, concern that Captain Maxwell was signaling the shore because he's in intimidated by aristocrats. Maxwell cuts Samuel and six lancers adrift in a landing raft in dangerous seas. They land behind the Russian lines and save a Tartar family from Cossacks. They discover Russians have built two redoubts on the hill south of the Russian river and packed them with artillery. Now it's even more urgent Samuel gets through the Russian lines and delivers this information. Samuel, Padraig, and the Tartar are attacked by Cossacks lead by the brutal Colonel Voltov. The other five lancers gallop from the trees to save them.Riding to the Russian lines, they are surprised by Tartar bandits and one of the is wounded in the fight. They use a canyon to bypass the Russian strongpoint at the River Alma and think their path back to the allies is clear. They discover a Russian division and thousands of cavalrymen have advanced to ambush for the allied army. Cossacks injure another lancer. Rather than leave him, Samuel decides to disguise the men as Cossacks and brazen his way through the Russian army. Russian gunners discover their ploy, and their officer knocks Samuel out. The blow gave Samuel amnesia, and he doesn't know his name or where he is. Samuel pieces his situation together and learns that the Russians plan to lure his Light Brigade into a trap, and a cowardly British staff-officer his men rescued orders him not to attempt to cross the enemy line, but to guard him instead. Samuel struggles from his sick bed and prepares his men to cross the enemy line. Voltov and his Cossacks find them, and Samuel slays Voltov in the ensuing skirmish. Samuel and his men break through the lines chased by Cossacks and warn the Light Brigade just as they prepare to ride into the ambush. Samuel and his rejoin his regiment as army advances against the Russian army for the Battle of Alma.
