Annabelle needs a mom; Shelby's dad will die happy if she marries. Once they escape their situation, a marriage of convenience seems like the perfect answer, and they hold a quick wedding, intending a life of separate bedrooms and shared responsibilities, with friendship and companionship, but not love.
