More DescriptionThis book is based mostly on real stories. Some of them are combined from parts told by different people. This is especially true about Gulag. Here one can find many similarities in different witness stories. Stalin's penitentiary machine ran through the Siberian camps 20 million people, and many of them were sharing a similar life path. Similar life produces similar stories. The only thing which is a pure fiction is the character's dreams. The book emerged from Inktober, a challenge to make a daily drawing for the whole of October. Instead of the separate pictures, I put together a story. The inspiration for 1970's stories came from memories of me and my friends including my mom. For Stalin times I used oral stories and checked them with paper and online sources. One month later, when the Inktober was over, I was still continuing making a panel per day until the story was over. The book has an Armenian text in speech balloons accompanied by English subtitles. This format will give the feeling of presence in the Soviet times to an American reader.
