Geometries of Crime: How Young People Perceive the Seriousness of Crime and Delinquency leans on the work of criminologists defining crime (e.g., John Hagan, Jock Young, Stuart Henry, and Mark Lanier) to put forth a more inclusive geometry of crime--one that incorporates youth perspectives. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted on the Red Hook Youth Court--a juvenile diversion program designed to prevent the formal processing of juvenile offenders (usually first-time offenders) within the juvenile justice system--this book explores how young people perceive the severity of crime and delinquency, whom or what they consider to be the victims of crime and delinquency, and how they analyze and assess appropriate responses to crime and delinquency by the criminal justice system. The goal is to offer beginning and advanced undergraduate students, as well as scholars of and practitioners in criminology and criminal justice, additional tools for developing a more elaborate and robust understanding of what constitutes crime.
