In 1885 George D. Valentine photographed a series of images of the Pink and White Terraces at Rotomahana, at the time hailed as on of the scenic wonders of the world. The following year the Terraces were destroyed by the Mt Tarawera eruption, and Valentine returned to record the transformation in the landscape. These images, along with his photographs of other areas of New Zealand and the South Sea Islands, create one of the most remarkable bodies of photographs from colonial New Zealand.
