It addresses the settlements of the early middle ages, new organisational forms like the march against Avars and Hungary, the reign of the House of Babenberg, the Habsburg monarchy on the rise to central European power and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. German description: Diese Geschichte Osterreichs spannt den Bogen von der Romerzeit, der Siedlungstatigkeit im Fruhmittelalter, neuen Organisationsformen als Mark gegen Awaren und Ungarn uber das babenbergische Herzogtum und den "Alpenstaat" der Habsburger, der vom 16. Jahrhundert an zu einer europaischen Macht heranwuchs, bis hin zum Kaisertum Osterreich, der osterreichisch-ungarischen Doppelmonarchie und schliesslich zur kleinen Republik des 20. Jahrhunderts.
