Despite a frustrated ecclesiastical career, Giraldus Cambrensis (Gerald of Wales, c.1146-1220/23) composed many literary works, including in volume 5 his treatise on Ireland, which revived the classical tradition of the ethnographic monograph. The Latin text, with an editorial preface in English, was published in the Rolls Series in 1867.
