More DescriptionA new edition of Christina Rossetti's beloved 1862 poetry collection, Goblin Market and Other Poems. Goblin Market tells the story of sisters Laura and Lizzie and their encounter with evil goblin merchants. When Laura exchanges a lock of her golden hair for the chance to taste the goblins' enchanted forbidden fruit, the bargain is more than she accounted for, and it falls to Lizzie to save her sister. Originally published in 1862, Goblin Market and Other Poems was immediately celebrated by critics and the public at large, with special praise for Rossetti's skillful sense of sound and meter as well as the collection's thematic complexity, many poems engaging with questions of temptation, transgression, and redemption.
Christina Rossetti (1830 -1894) was an English poet, most famous for her romantic, devotional, and children's poems, including "Goblin Market" and poems that become two of the most famous and beloved Christmas carols, "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "Love Came Down at Christmas." She was a sister of the artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
