Gods are simply the specific antithesis that allows us to know ourselves as human. Seeing ourselves in terms of others is not a specific human awareness. Animals have the same capacity, even displaying a sense of time. Dogs for example remember us from the past, and look forward to seeing us in the future. So attributing one's thoughts to a god or spirit is an act of human self-awareness. It is a mirror that we hold up to ourselves. The belief in god is what made us human because it made us self-aware.
