Grain refinement by chemical additions is almost universal for aluminium castings, being applied equally for large-scale DC-cast wrought alloys and for small-scale shaped castings. The process is important for other alloy systems also, notably magnesium alloys. Light alloys are assuming ever greater importance in energy-efficient transport and are the subject of much development worldwide. In parallel with these industrial developments, fundamental studies have made great advances in understanding nucleation mechanisms. As a result, there have been improvements in grain-refining practice and performance. It is often now possible to make quantitative predictions of grain size in industrial castings. Overall, grain refinement by inoculation is likely to become important for a wider range of systems.
