More DescriptionMost history is written top-down; that is, it focuses on famous people. In this the third of the Granbury History trilogy, Barnett begins with forty ordinary families selected at random from the U.S. Census and tells their dramatic stories and often exciting stories.Granbury is a small north-central Texas town founded after the Civil War. Of all the towns around, it became a prosperous and beautiful place to live. Not all of the stories in this volume are about prosperous individuals. Some are dastardly criminals, and several leave their wives and families in the lurch. But mostly, Granbury was a town of highly moral people devoted to doing the right thing. During Reconstruction after the Civil War, there were 29 lynchings in the counties around Granbury. Hood County had none. In fact, a biracial community began to help former slaves transition to freedom.Women, too, made advances in Granbury. Nellie Robertson became the first female county in Texas. She was nominated to serve on the Texas Supreme Court. Josephine Cogdell went to New York, married an African-American man, and became a popular dancer and actress. The book is 147 pages long, printed with a handsome cover on high-quality paper. Granbury is called "the place where Texas history lives." These are the people who brought that history alive.
