The heros of this story are the Greenlanders themselves, and the landscape is their country. The stories here are carried in the memories of individuals who lived and worked in Greenland before the Second World War interrupted the course of history and changed life there forever. Most of these stories come to us through Inger-Inger Knudsen Holm Morse-my wife, who loves Greenland with all her heart; Helga Knudsen Morse, my late wife, and Inger's sister; their twin brothers, Per and Ib Knudsen; and their late parents, Sir Aage and Lady Else Knudsen.Other stories come from Commander Donald B. MacMillan and his wife Miriam, both of whom were Arctic explorers and writers. Another point of view is reflected in the journals of Arctic explorers and scientists who spent time in Greenland in the first half of the 20th century. These recollections describe the lives of Greenlanders and the essence of their community, based on caring and mutual support. They may not have had the benefit of our educational opportunities, but they were wise, dependable, and full of common sense. If you measure a culture by the ingenious ways in which people thrive under adverse conditions, the Inuit get full marks.
