Hill Company was, for nearly a century, the extension of two gifted and determined men whose vision and foresight created a great family business that has endured through careful decision-making and strategy, as well as community support. Horace Greeley Hill Sr. and Jr. guided the company from 1895 until 1993. Since 1993, after assuming the leadership of a company in sound financial shape, Wentworth Caldwell Jr. and then Jimmy Granbery have stewarded and promoted extraordinary growth.The Hill Company has always been about more than groceries or, in more recent years, real estate. As a family-owned business, it embraced co-workers as family, encouraging a learning culture and personal growth in service of the enterprise. In 1925, the company's job application form concluded with a few words of career advice that epitomize the company's values to this day: "Keep your eyes and ears open all the time, be willing to learn and always ready to listen-for the things that mean success are ambition, honesty, enthusiasm, determination, a good personal appearance, and a thorough knowledge of your business."
