More DescriptionIn this paranormal romance, Jan Bartok, plagued by premonitions, a chestnut-haired, blue-eyed, Texas border patrol officer, returns home when she inherits the family farm near Logan, Ohio. Her renter, a Columbus chef (Chad Stillwell) who serves daily lunches at the lakeside chalet, is expecting his lease to expire at the end of that month. Jan's premonitions turn death threatening when, on arrival, she finds the assistant cook vanished only that morning. Chad and Jan - sometimes attracted, sometimes repulsed by mutual suspicions - work together to resolve the threats and menacing elements of ghost rumors, a glowering barn, and a brooding house. Jan's special sense warns of caves, skeletons, gold and death - plus a mysterious dark-haired man. The very first night the house creaks with eerie noises and a figure attacks Jan in the kitchen. Outside, devil worshipers prance, waving torches, bloodying the barn, and killing animals. Jan suspects old friends, even Jack Bryan, the sheriff, and his wife, Amylou; a minister and his wife; Rick, who now delivers groceries; and Jan's former boyfriend, Jesse (all members of Jan's former teenage gang - the Secret Six, SS6). Chad, a black-bearded bear of a man matching Jan's 5' 8", orders Jan to work, thinking her an agency-sent replacement cook. Briefly she goes along with it. While working she reveals her special intuition and Le Cordon Bleu training by making vinaigrette without orders. During the next weeks, mysterious figures haunt the halls, Jan is attacked in her own bedroom, and sees a headless dog and bloody symbols in her bed as well as on her door. She predicts a fall and auto accident for Chad, and envisions a murder. Jan is certain the young, pregnant, former cook is dead. This is reinforced when a second girl (one of their helpers) also disappears in or near the barn. Will they find the answers to their questions and solve the mystery? Or give up and go their separate ways, never to find true love with each other?
