The first novella by the author. Headlong Hall by English author
Thomas Love Peacock is a book of satire fiction written in 1815 and first published in 1816 by T. Hookman, Jun, and Co. This is a reprint of Headlong Hall from an 1837 author compilation edition.
Sneak Peak. nothing can be more obvious than that all animals were created solely and exclusively for the use of man ---
All philosophers, who find
Some favourite system to their mind,
In every point to make it fit,
Will force all nature to submit. Synopsis Like other Welsh squires, Harry Headlong enjoys shooting, hunting, and drinking in the winter of 1815. But he has a passionate desire to get to know philosophers and dilettantes and invites them to his house.
Four visitors arrive at Headlong Hall:
1. Mr. Foster "
the perfectibilian";
2. Mr. Escot "
the deteriorationist";
3. Mr. Jenkins "
the statu-quoite"; and
4. Reverend Doctor Gaster "
who though of course neither a philosopher nor a man of taste, had so won the Squire's fancy by a learned dissertation on the art of stuffing a turkey, that he concluded no Christmas party would be complete without him."
They discover other visitors in the Hall, including the phrenologist Mr. Cranium, the philosopher Mr. Panscope, the amateur musician Mr. Chromatic, and the well-known author Miss Philomela Poppyseed.
Squire Headlong guides the guests through a series of dinners and Christmas celebrations with the main emphasis of the story being the ongoing dialogue between the several exponents and their varying perspectives. Four couples had become engaged before the party's last morning, and Reverend Gaster officiates their wedding!
