More DescriptionThis enlightening book is about celebrating and appreciating diversity and understanding differences. The main character is from a different country and she has purple stripes, while the local townspeople have green stripes. When the locals begin to make trouble for the new girl, the Mayor steps in to explain why differences are necessary. ?We don't all agree berry cake is the best. With all the cakes in the world, who'd eat the rest? The Mayor points out the reality of trite sayings, ?Love one another. That's easy to say, but hard to remember when I don't get my way.' The Mayor wants others to think how they'd feel on the other end of the stick when she says, ?You think how you think. You do what you do. What if nobody here had ever liked you? She points out that even when we like another person, we may not always like them when she says, ?We all like sweet people
But what really is tough is loving them also when they're acting up.' The Mayor encourages everyone to take responsibility for their own beliefs when she says? ?It's easy to follow, but leading is tough. Don't just go with the crowd when things are rough.' The narrator of the story, also a character who is involved in the action, is called by his own conscience to take action. He is inspired by the talk the Mayor gives about being inclusive and asks the new girl what her favorite cake is so he can make it for her. It turns out they both like berry cake the best. At the end, our narrator concludes the story by saying, ?So, with one invitation I have a friend who is new. Best of all, her favorite cake is my favorite, too.'
