She departs Tennessee with her brother Ethan, her aunt, Awinta and her dog Yona, facing tremendous challenges along the way. Hester and her brother vow to help anyone who needs healing during the war. Awinta, Easter's half sister, who is of African and Cherokee descent, heads west with her long-time love, Atsadi, only to find herself in the middle of the Battle of Honey Springs and other conflicts.
