By analysing what these patterns actually are and presenting them logically, Drs Al-Nafussi and Hughes aim to give the trainee pathologist quicker and more thorough access to this expert knowledge.
The book is divided into three sections, the first including fourteen chapters describing different histological patterns, listing sub-patterns and supplying an index of entities belonging to each subpattern. These indexes are designed to guide the pathologist from identification of the architectural pattern. In the alphabetical list of tumours and tumour-like conditions, each entity is described in a standard format which moves from an entity's clinical features, through a panoramic view of the lesion and a differential diagnosis section to a section on special techniques.
The third section is a system index which enables a 'narrowing down' of the differential diagnosis according to the tissue or organ from which the specimen was taken.
