More DescriptionIn my daily work as a clinical metacognitive psychologist, I come across many people who spend the majority of their waking hours searching their minds for answers in an effort to find meaning or answers, or in an effort to make the best choice. Ironically, they reach a deadlock while attempting to determine how to move forward in life.
In order to challenge our thoughts and beliefs and replace them with more reasonable or compassionate ones, we must take the time to reflect on them. My understanding of mental illnesses was completely altered when I learned about metacognitive therapy, which focuses on simply letting go of your thoughts
Metacognitive strategies can help you lessen the overthinking that fuels your symptoms, whether you simply worry a little more than you'd like to or have an anxiety or depressive disorder. With the help of metacognitive therapy, you can learn that regardless of the nature of a thought or the emotions it arouses, you have the power to choose whether or not to act on it. I'll walk you through a few of the techniques I employ in metacognitive therapy in the section that follows to help my clients stop overthinking and understand that it's something we can control, not something that just happens to us.
