Howard Hodgkin was born Gordon Howard Eliot Hodgkin in London, England on August 6, 1932. He studied art at the Camberwell School of Art in London and at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham. He taught for many years at the Charterhouse School, the Bath Academy of Art, and the Chelsea School of Art.
In 1962, he was given a one-man show at Arthur Tooth and Sons. Some of his paintings include Memoirs, Jealousy, and Dinner at Smith Square. He had his first show in New York in 1973 and his first museum exhibition, at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, in 1976. He also had several traveling exhibitions including Howard Hodgkin: Forty Paintings, 1973-84 and Howard Hodgkin: Paintings 1975-1995. He died on March 9, 2017 at the age of 84.
