Hummingbird Hill is a collection of autobiographical anecdotes that cover the span of a year, organized month by month. The collection includes a generous portion of Mexican and Aztec history and mythology, in addition to the stories about day-to-day dealings with local friends and neighbors (and ranch animals, some of whom become interesting characters). The narrator is genuinely likable and shows a good sense of humor. Although the stories about the ranch are straightforward depictions of everyday life, with no obvious attempt to glamorize it or make it sound like high adventure, the appeal of this way of life is still readily apparent.
