The story gives insight into the decisions made by many immigrants to leave their place of birth, pursue their dreams in the United States and eventually assimilate into the American culture. We see the immigrant struggle through the eyes and life of Benjamin, a little boy who escapes his reality by pretending to be a little green bird, named Quetzal. Benni's imagination allows him to escape from the hunger pains and the many struggles he and his family face as they decide to leave behind everything they know and love.
