The story opens in 1905 with Clarence at work with his mind on Clydis. He is in love with her but doesn’t understand her attitude toward himself and others. At home Clydis awaits the birth of Edith. Her mind ponders a future for herself and Edith. Later, Clydis lives in terror for her child’s life and her own. Trapped in Europe with an insane parent who holds the child captive, the young woman eventually escapes with her child. Bloody, torn, she wins the right for her child to be woman, finally reaching the arms of her husband. Meantime, not knowing where to look, the husband works and worries to a state of advanced emaciation, praying to God the while to let them come home. A dog helps him find them.

Among supporting roles in the drama are a “different” preacher whom some admire while others loathe. His interaction with an Indian princess causes much strife including the near death of Red, a friend of Clarence. Dealing with that turmoil and with the troubles of the group of Indians helps to keep Clarence from total despair regarding his lost family. A set of charming grandparents coupled with delightful family friends also help to resolve the young family’s dilemma while adding their own excitement and humor to the story.
