The authors relationship with Sonny Rollins stemmed from a forty-year family friendship. When Sonny developed significant health problems, the author, a physician, offered her ear and expertise as a physician and advocate. A series of regular telephone conversations began. Sonny openly shared thoughts and concepts that have evolved through his life as he progressed through many great lessons, and at times, very difficult lessons.
