Sneak Peak. For he that does good, having the unlimited power to do evil, deserves praise not only for the good which he performs, but for the evil which he forbears. ---
"I have heard men talk of the blessings of freedom," he said to himself, "but I wish any wise man would teach me what use to make of it now that I have it." Synopsis Prince John is in charge in this 12th-century England while his brother King Richard is abroad fighting in the Crusades.
Prince John and other members of the Norman aristocracy misuse their position of authority during his rule against the Saxons, driving them off their domains and reducing many Saxon nobles to serfdom. Ivanhoe, who was excommunicated by his own Saxon father for fighting alongside King Richard the Lionheart, makes a covert appearance at a tournament at Ashby after coming back from the Crusades. Prince John and his advisers find out that King Richard has also returned from the crusades after disclosing himself to them. Ivanhoe aids King Richard (a conflict which introduces Robin Hood and his Merry Men into novel literature for the first time) to regain his kingdom, his own rightful inheritance, and the love of the Lady Rowena.
