More DescriptionDresden-based Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679¿1745) is now regarded as one of the leading figures of early eighteenth-century German musical life. His six settings of the Marian antiphon ¿Ave regina coelorum¿ (ZWV 128), written in 1737, belong to his late period, when he composed some of his most celebrated works. Offering stylistic variety and flexibility of ensemble, they also exemplify key elements of Viennese liturgico-musical practices, which were emphasized in Dresden following the arrival of Habsburg archduchess Maria Josepha, and her influential brand of religious expression, pietas austriaca, upon her marriage to Friedrich August II. This volume presents, for the first time, a critical edition of the complete set.
