Accompanying Tyson s exhibitions Geno Pheno 1 & 2, at Haunch of Venison, London and PaceWildenstein, New York respectively, this catalogue presents the artist s eclectic mixed-media artworks that result from his experiments with the form and content of art, and his engagement with the theoretical structures that purport to explain the world. Geno Pheno takes the traditional diptych form as a starting point for a radical and playful exploration of the nature and boundaries of artistic creation. Each piece is a two-part structure, consisting of a genotype (the genetic material of the work) and a phenotype (the physical expression of that material). Sculpturally, Tyson uses the plinth and the object to represent this double nature, while the paintings are diptychs which reflect upon one another.
