At the center of the calendar is the sun Tonatiuh, which they believed presided over the fifth and current epoch. They feared that earthquakes would destroy him, obliterating the universe for all time, if they displeased him. In each eagle claw he clutches a human heart, meant to feed him as he travels across the sky each day.
