The fall of the Berlin Wall and its repercussions in international organizations has led to changes in the relative status of various languages used in international fora and even to changes within languages such as Russian. Despite the ever-increasing prevalence of English and changes in the use of other languages--perhaps greater status for German, less for Russian--the study of other languages in U.S. society remains a key component of international literacy.
