"Legend of the Soul Eater" takes place about 2,000 years ago in the Mississippi River Valley, near what is now Natchez, Mississippi. The Choctaw and the Natchez are the descendants of the Indians who lived in the region at that time and most of the fables used in this book are authentic, based on ancient stories that were passed from generation to generation. Miko, the young son of the tribal chief, is hunting one day when he encounters a gigantic bear that chases him deep into the forest. He escapes the following morning, but by the time he returns to his village his mother and father are greatly concerned about him. In the weeks following the bear attack, two mysterious strangers walk into the village and teach Miko the magic of a far away land. Their arrival coincides with a series of disasters--flood, earthquakes, attacks from a neighboring village and a mysterious disease. As he makes his way through disaster after another, Miko learns about the legend of the Soul Eater, the great evil force of the universe. In time, the young boy learns the secrets of dark side of the universe from the village shaman. With the help of the mysterious strangers, Miko and his father come to terms with their mortality--and put their lives on the line for the survival of the village.
