Sarah Joanne Rogers was born in Jacksonville, Florida on March 9, 1928. She earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance at Rollins College in Florida and a master's degree in music from Florida State University in Tallahassee. Beginning in the 1970s, she performed with her college friend Jeannine Morrison for nearly forty years. Fred and Joanne married in 1952. She did voice overs on his first television show in Pittsburgh, The Children's Corner (1954-1961). On Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, she was the inspiration for Queen Sarah. She also taught piano at two places in Pittsburgh, a prep school at Chatham College and at Carlow College.

Joanne and Fred Rogers were married for over fifty years. After his death in February of 2003, she worked at spreading his message of kindness. She promoted the 2018 documentary about her husband by Morgan Neville, Won't You Be My Neighbor?, and the 2019 film starring Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers and Maryann Plunkett as Mrs. Rogers, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Joanne Rogers died at her home in Pittsburgh, PA. on January 13, 2021 at the age of 92.
