More DescriptionThis is the third in the series of season-long weekly blog entries from the Liverpool FC fan blog, The LFC File. Each Gameweek is summarised with relevant Tweets for each subject. Now for the first time in colour.
Following the clubs maiden Premiership title, there was high expectation around Anfield for the 2020-21 Season, especially with the arrival of summer signings Diojo Jota and Thiago at the club. However, the season proved to be a challenging one, as the majority of games were played behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The teams early form was solid, despite losing three of the clubs senior central defenders in Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, and they broke the club record for the longest unbeaten run at home in the league, which had previously stood at 63 games.
This incredible run ended on 21st January with a 0-1 home defeat to Burnley, the team having recorded 68 games without loss at Anfield. A very tough period followed this narrow defeat, as a lack of confidence, coupled with an empty stadium and an injury-ravaged squad took its toll, and we suffered a run of six consecutive defeats at Anfield.
Fortunately, the team was able to reverse their fortunes, winning eight of the final ten league games, which included goalkeeper Alisson scoring a stoppage-time winner against Wes Brom, the first goal ever scored by a Liverpool goalkeeper in the 129 year history of the club and thus qualifying for the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League.
