1999 was very close to draw the end. I was in Sydney at my younger daughter`s house, together with my wife and my elder daughter. After a long and tiring professional life, I was dreaming to rest and not to do anything at my retirement. The big cities of the world were racing each other to celebrate the end of a millennium and coming of a new one, with magnificent shows. Sydney was among these cities. I generally was waking up early in the mornings and strolling through the city and watching the year-end preparations. One day, while I was walking along the shore, towards the Watsons bay, I found myself on a hill from where I could see a panoramic view of the harbour. I stared the sun setting over the city skyline. Reddish yellow lights surrounding the sky were inspiring me artistic feelings. Being unaware of how long did I cruise in the ocean of memories, suddenly everything darkened when the sun disappeared behind a thick flock of clouds. Dark blue and purple ones now replaced the red and yellow clouds that were decorating the sky, some moments ago. Far away from the horizon line, dark colours of the clouds turned into a hell-like black. I felt the tremors of pessimism from my soul to flesh. Would I suddenly loose all the glitters of the life and colourful treasures I gathered during my life span, as happened at sun set time? Was life an illusion like a rainbow starting with bright green and yellow colours and ending up in blue purple darkness? I ran back home, went to sleep without talking to my kids. I woke up early in the morning and rushed out to the balcony overlooking the harbour. The sun had not yet risen but light purple beams ascending from horizon had made the dark clouds visible in the sky. I was just about to fall into a deep pessimism when a bright yellow crown appeared on the hills over the waters of harbour. The sun light, was miraculously recreating the nature. Ghost spots on the sea were no more floating boats but motifs of a silk Hereke carpet. The clouds in the sky were as colourful as the paints on the palette of a painter. My feelings too, were very much different from those of yesterday. If each setting sun was the preparation of a new morning, then we human beings should also have prepared something different for the next days. May be the reason of our existence was nothing but to contribute to the everlasting change of the world or prepare something different, within the limits of our destiny.
