Henry-Louis de La Grange was born in Paris, France on May 26, 1924. He graduated from the University of Provence in Aix-en-Provence and the Yale School of Music. In the early 1950s, he was a music critic for The New York Times and other publications. In 1945, he was so moved by a Gustav Mahler symphony he heard at Carnegie Hall that he devoted the rest of his life to researching the Viennese composer's biography. He published the first volume of the biography, Gustav Mahler, in 1973. He founded the Médiathèque Musicale Mahler in Paris, a scholarly resource center, with Maurice Fleuret.
He also went on to direct or collaborate on concerts, exhibitions, festivals, and film and television documentaries. He died on January 27, 2017 at the age of 92.
