Author Biography
Ginzberg, Asher Hirsch (Author)
A self-taught thinker and Hebrew essayist, Ahad Ha-Am (meaning "One of the People") received a traditional Jewish education in his Hasidic home in Skvira, Kiev. Not being able to reconcile his modern rationalist thinking with Hasidism, he first abandoned that way of life and eventually all religious faith.

Settling in Odessa in 1884, he became one of the leading members of the Hibbat Zion (Lovers of Zion) movement in Russia. Ahad Ha-Am developed an idea of Zionism that was not rooted in completely political ideals. He did not agree with those who urged the establishment of a national Jewish homeland for the sake of obtaining the survival of many desperate Jews who suffered under the severity of czarist Russia. Instead Ahad Ha-Am placed more emphasis on the need to create a national consciousness by cultural preparation through education. "Cultural Zionism" developed around the idea of a Jewish state as the "spiritual center" for all Jews.

As editor of Ha-Shilo'ah (1896), the predominant monthly of Hebrew literature and Zionism in Eastern Europe, Ahad Ha-Am contributed to the development of Hebrew literature. After he settled in Palestine in 1922, Ahad Ha-Am continued to expound his ideas of spiritual and cultural revitalization. It was there that he published his correspondence and memoirs.
