Having endured that transition himself, in his case retiring from the African bush where he spent twelve years working with the Maasai, he returned to America with a box full of manuscripts and no plans. When he returned to America, he had to find a new way of life. Kananen's way of coping is through his stories, and he used his character, Dr. Kurt Jacobi, to teach him how to make that transition. Fiction is sometimes only a story, and sometimes it shows us the path which we ought to walk. Kananen followed the path of his character.This story is frightening, sad, happy, confusing, joyful, and rewarding; so is life!
