Author Biography
Hurford, Peter (Author)
Peter John Hurford was born in Minehead, Somerset, England on November 22, 1930. He trained under the composer and organist Harold Darke and became an organ scholar at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he studied music and law. After military service and further study with the French organist André Marchal, Hurford became the organist at Holy Trinity Church. In 1958, he became the organist and master of the music at St. Albans Cathedral. He remained there until 1978. He served as president of the Royal College of Organists from 1980 to 1982 and was made an officer of Order of the British Empire in 1984.

He was an organist, composer and choir director. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he recorded Bach's complete organ works for Decca. He published the handbook, Making Music on the Organ, in 1988. He died on March 3, 2019 at the age of 88.
