More DescriptionMari and The Majestic Butterfly is about a African American girl between the age of 6 and 7 who is trying to understand and deal with losing her grandma. Mari is the main character and the supporting characters are Mari's three (3) brothers; Trevon (is the oldest and loves video games), Malik (is the middle brother and great break dancer and moon walker), and Makhi (is the youngest and loves ALL pizza). The story approaches this delicate situation by showing its readers how Mari seemed to have not clearly understood her Grandma's passing to be permanent. Consumed by the all the planning that surrounds funerals and the influx of people visiting over the course 3 days, Mari's parents did not discern fully that Mari was struggling with what it means when someone passes. The story goes on to show the wonderful relationship Mari and her brothers have with Grandma. When Grandma passes away, Mari's life is turned upside down, but she is determined to find out why she left and when she is coming back. Mari navigates through this sad time in her life by going into action with three attempts to talk to her Grandma. The story ends on a happier note in that Mari comes to understand and accept Grandma's passing with the help of her mother, and the majestic butterfly who visits Mari in her dreams.
